For my next substitute art lesson: Electric guitar drawings. If you are looking for a fun sub plan that ties into another school subject, this one is for you.  The students will have the opportunity to learn how to draw the guitar step by step and learn its anatomy.  The best part is being able to customize it to match their personality and interests.

This substitute art lesson is geared towards upper elementary students.  When leaving sub plans, I try to leave lessons that they can use for multiple grade levels to make it easier for the sub. My goal is also to have a very low amount of prep.  The substitute teacher should simply be able to read the packets to the kids, while they reference the steps and images as they draw. Materials are out, copies are pre-printed and paper is cut ahead of time.

Notes about teaching the electric guitar substitute art lesson

Electric guitars most commonly have six strings.  Realistically it may be hard for the kids to fit that many, so this step is flexible.  This is a great opportunity to leave electric guitar instrumental music for the students to listen to as they work.  You can also leave a blank guitar template if you have shorter classes or need to adapt to meet the needs of particular students. To wrap up the lesson, the students can come up with band names and share their designs with their table mates.  I recommend having a handout showing the basics of the step by step of drawing an electric guitar.

Supply List:

  • Construction paper (12×18 or 10×18)
  • Pencils
  • Rulers
  • Markers or crayons
  • Sharpies (Optional/if you prefer for your kids to outline their drawings)
  • Any handouts or references that you have available
  • Instrumental electric guitar music
  • Slideshow of fun electric guitar designs.

Electric Guitar Substitute Art Lesson Drawing Steps:

  • Have students listen to a clip of an electric guitar and show them some examples of colorful and decorative guitar designs.
  • The students will need their construction paper, turned vertically.
  • They will draw the main components of the electric guitar: neck, body headstock, strings, pick guard, etc.
  • Add decorations based on their personality, fun theme or something that is their favorite (examples: animal, video game character, nature, food, school subject).
  • Students will color their designs in neatly with markers or crayons.

*kids should take these home at the end of class.  That way there’s no art for you to go through or pass back upon your return!
