Need a quick, easy art Sub plan? Next up in my elementary art sub plan article series is a simple bullseye Op Art sub plan. This low-stress art sub plan is a great choice for grades 3-5 and keeps the kids engaged.  The finished artwork looks impressive and the kids love that their art appears to “pop” off of the page.

What is Op Art?

Op Art stands for Optical Art—artwork that creates the illusion of movement or depth. In other words, it’s a style of art that tricks the eyes.  Artists use elements such as line, color and shapes to make their art look as if it’s popping off of the page, despite the flat surface that it’s on.

Supply List

  • 9×12 construction or drawing paper
  • Pencil
  • Sharpie (I have had good luck with these fine tipped Sharpies)
  • Markers
  • White colored pencils (My go-to’s are Prismacolor white colored pencils).

Steps to Create Bullseye Easy Art Sub Plan:

  • Students will add a dot in the middle of the paper
  • Branching out from the dot, the kids will draw curved lines to the bottom, top and sides of the paper.  They will need a total of 6 lines
  • In every other section they will draw 4 lines curving downward.  They can be evenly space or go from closer to further apart.
  • In the remaining sections, they will draw 4 more lines curving upward.  The lines in each section should be connected to the adjacent lines.
  • All lines should be outlined in sharpie
  • The students will pick an alternating color scheme and color in with markers.  Examples: warm vs cool, 2 different complementary color combinations.
  • Using a white colored pencil, the students will color a thin highlight running down each section. (white crayon in a pinch)

*kids should take these home at the end of class.  That way there’s no art for you to go through or pass back upon your return!
