4 Valentine's Day art lessons for elementary art students-checkerboard heart, drippy heart op art, cartoon hearts and balloon hearts.

4 Fun Valentine’s Day Art Lessons for your Elementary Students

March 8, 2025 by Jenn

If you’re looking for something other than your everyday Valentine’s heart art this week, check out some of my mini Valentine’s Day art lessons below.  Two of these also incorporate two of my favorite contemporary artists.

  • Checkerboard Heart-This Lesson is Op Art inspired. Nothing makes a shape look cooler than a checkerboard design.  All the students have to do is start with a large heart and add a checkerboard within.  Be sure to have them match the curves of the heart as the checkerboard design goes toward the edges of the heart. The kids can customize both the added border and the overall color scheme. When finished with their drawing, they can outline in sharpie(optional) and color with either crayons or markers.

  • Your younger student will get a kick out of drawing Valentine’s day heart Balloons.  They will draw a handful of hearts of varying sizes, add the tie and some strings.  They can have fun with adding any type of patterns or designs within the balloons then coloring in with crayons.  You can go big with 12×18 construction paper.  It will be easier to add patterns if the hearts are large scale.

Drippy Heart Art-Give your students a chance to check out the psychedelic and drip themed artwork of Jen Stark.  Turn your average heart themed, Valentine’s day art into an optic art inspired piece of artwork. The kids will aim to draw a series of two to three patterned hearts. The background will consist of“drippy shapes”, filled with “drippy lines. I recommend outlining before the kids set out to color.  The students will choose how to have contrasting color schemes in the hearts vs the background so that the hearts will stand out.  Think black and white vs rainbow or warm vs cool colors.

  • Your students will love creating Funny Heart Characters with this Chris Uphues inspired Valentine’s Day art lesson.  Be sure to give them a look at his cartoon style hearts, shapes and characters. First they will need to fill up their page with hearts of varying sizes and add funny faces. Next they will need to add lines going behind the hearts.  The type of line is totally up to them.  They can think of the lines like rainbows, as they will need to layer in a few different colored lines.  They will add some additional cute designs in the background like fruit, bugs, flowers, etc.
